Native Plant Stewardship Committee
The Native Plant Stewardship Committee was established in the Town of Laurel Park to manage local efforts in preserving native plant communities and addressing the impacts of invasive plants. This committee was previously known as the Invasive Species Committee. The name change reflects the importance of native plants in maintaining healthy ecosystems, supporting local wildlife, and contributing to the natural character of Laurel Park. While the primary role of the committee remains the management of invasive plants, there will now be a greater focus on the stewardship of native plants and their associated communities.
Mission
Native plants are the foundation of our local plant communities, providing essential habitat and food sources for pollinators, birds, and other wildlife. However, the spread of invasive plants threatens these ecosystems by outcompeting native vegetation, reducing biodiversity, and altering natural landscapes. The committee will address these challenges through coordinated invasive plant management efforts, habitat restoration, and public education.
The committee’s work will focus on three core strategies:
1. Invasive Plant Management: Develop and implement plans to manage/remove invasive plants on public and prioritized private lands.
2. Native Plant Stewardship: Encouraging the use, conservation, and restoration of native plants in landscapes and natural areas.
3. Community Engagement: Providing resources, workshops, and volunteer opportunities to foster a shared sense of responsibility and connection to Laurel Park’s natural environment.
The Native Plant Stewardship Committee will collaborate with residents, local organizations, and regional experts to help preserve Laurel Park’s natural heritage for future generations.
