Protecting Native Plants & Combating Invasives: Preserving Laurel Park’s Natural Heritage
Laurel Park is a community in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina. This region boasts a rich diversity of plant life, with native plant species playing a crucial role in sustaining the ecosystems of the Southern Appalachian Mountains. Non-native (exotic) plants are also prevalent. While some are relatively harmless, others exhibit invasive traits that threaten native plant populations and disrupt natural habitats.
Among the non-native species, invasive plants pose a severe threat due to their aggressive growth and competitive nature.
Preserving and expanding Laurel Park’s native plant communities begins with identifying and removing invasive species. Where needed, restoration efforts can help rehabilitate degraded areas, creating healthier habitats where native plants can thrive. At the same time, we must also locate and accurately identify our native species to better understand, protect, and promote them.
The Native Plant Stewardship Committee of Laurel Park (formerly the Invasive Species Committee) was established in Spring 2025 to address the challenges posed by invasive plants and to promote the preservation, protection, and expansion of native plant communities throughout our community.
We invite you to get involved!
We welcome your experience and help in the following areas:
Plant Identification – Assist with identification and creating an inventory of native and invasive plant species.
Mapping and Documentation – Help us map plant populations and maintain records of key plant communities.
Education and Outreach – Help build our knowledge base of the natural communities in Laurel Park.
Stewardship Activities – Participate in invasive plant removal, native plant restoration, and habitat improvement projects.
