Managing Invasive Plants
What to look for, how to decide on a method, and what it takes to keep an area clear once you've cleared it
Invasive plant management is a well-established science. Effective control follows from correctly identifying the plant and understanding how it lives and spreads — it is not guesswork.
Because invasive plants do not respect property lines, successful management requires coordinated, community-wide effort rather than isolated individual actions.
STEP ONE
Identify the plant, then learn how it lives
Correct ID first
Every decision downstream depends on knowing what you have. A method that works on one species can spread another. If you are not certain, send us a photo before you start. See our photo guide.
Annual or Perennial?
An annual persists only through seed in the soil. A perennial regrows from roots, rhizomes, or stem fragments. The two demand completely different approaches.
How does it spread?
Seed, root, fragments, or a combination. This single question determines whether cutting helps or makes things worse.
THE FRAMEWORK
Four Phases of Management
Step One - Prevention
Stop new infestations before they start — clean tools and equipment, avoid moving contaminated soil or mulch, remove new arrivals early. Several invasive plants are still sold in local garden centers — do not purchase them.
Step Two - Eradication
Control, remove, or reduce an existing population using the ID- and biology-based method that fits the plant. These include the use of the appropriate herbicide, cutting, mowing, digging.
Step Three - Containment
For infestations too large to eradicate right away, stop further spread — control satellite plants and maintain a buffer around the core population. Monitor on a regular basis schedule.
Step Four - Long Term Management
Ongoing monitoring, often for years, to catch re-sprouts and new seedlings before they reestablish. Best times to scout are early Spring and Early Fall.
MATCH MANAGEMENT METHOD TO PLANT BIOLOGY
Let the biology decide
Once you know how a plant persists and spreads, the right approach follows from it.
Annual, seed only
One generation per year; persists only in the soil seed bank. Prevent seed set — spray, pull, cut, or mow before flowering, and repeat for several years. A soil-active herbicide in late winter also depletes the seed bank.
Perennial, vegetative
Regrows from roots, rhizomes, or fragments; cutting alone often triggers denser re-sprouting. Target the root system — repeated cutting paired with foliar herbicide, or a cut-stem application. Dispose of all fragments properly.
Perennial, seed and vegetative
Hardest to control — re-infests from seed even after the roots are managed. Combined strategy: prevent seed set and attack the root system in the same season. Expect multi-year follow-up.

Two Commitments
Have a restoration plan
Bare ground does not stay bare. Clearing an area without a plan for what replaces it invites the same invasives back, or new ones. Know what you are planting before you start removing.Plan for follow-up, not a single fix
Almost nothing is solved in one season. Seed banks persist, roots resprout, and neighboring properties reinfest. Budget several years of monitoring from the outset.
CHOOSING AN APPROACH
Herbicide and Mechanical
Neither is universally better. The right choice depends on the species, the size of the infestation, and the site/location.
Mechanical
Mowing, Cutting, Digging
MAIN RISK
Spreading fragment-based species such as knotweed; soil disturbance and erosion, especially on slopes. Can disrupt soil microflora and bring buried weed seed to the surface.
BEST SUITED FOR
Kudzu crowns on young or isolated plants; annuals before seed set; small, isolated patches.
MUST DO
Dispose of cut or dug material properly — never compost it or set it out at the curb. Have a restoration plan ready first.
GOOD TO KNOW
Kudzu regrows from its crown, not scattered root fragments. Its real spread risk is vine layering, where nodes root wherever cut vines touch soil.
Herbicide
Foliar and Soil Application, Cut Stem Applications
MAIN RISK
Exposure to non-target plants if the method or the weather is not matched to the site and conditions.
BEST SUITED FOR
Established perennial infestations, especially fragment-spreaders like knotweed and large infestations. Also for prevention of germination of annual plants like Japanese stiltgrass. Useful on terrain where digging may cause erosion.
MUST DO
Read and follow the entire label. It is product-specific and legally binding.
GOOD TO KNOW
Cut-stem application minimizes exposure near desirable plants; foliar suits larger open areas. Hiring the work out? Confirm the applicator holds an NC license.
